British broadcaster is launching its second-generation Sky Glass

Sky has unveiled its second-generation Sky Glass TV, promising a leap forward in both picture quality and immersive sound. Launched on 11 February 2025, the Gen 2 model builds on the success of its 2021 predecessor, retaining the core appeal of Sky TV integration without requiring a satellite dish or external box. Here’s a deep dive into what’s new, who it’s for, and how it fits into the evolving TV market.

### **What’s New in Sky Glass Gen 2?**

**1. Enhanced Picture Quality**

The Gen 2 TV features a **4K Quantum Dot display** with advanced HDR and increased brightness.

While Sky has stopped short of adopting Mini LED or OLED panels, the new model boasts "way more LEDs" in its full-array backlight, along with additional local dimming zones. This results in deeper blacks, reduced blooming, and wider viewing angles compared to the original .

Sky has also introduced **auto-optimizing picture modes** (e.g., Sport, Movies, Vivid) that adjust settings based on content. A demo showcased *John Wick: Chapter 4* with striking neon highlights against dark scenes, emphasizing improved contrast .

**2. Cinematic Dolby Atmos Sound**

This 3.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup aims to deliver "360-degree cinematic sound," from helicopter effects to stadium crowds .

The built-in sound system now includes **seven speakers** (up from six in Gen 1), with dedicated upward-firing drivers and a dual subwoofer for richer bass. This 3.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup aims to deliver "360-degree cinematic sound," from helicopter effects to stadium crowds .

Sky claims users save 30% compared to buying a separate TV and soundbar, though audiophiles may still prefer dedicated systems .

**3. Streamlined Design and Setup**

The Gen 2 retains the original’s minimalist aesthetic but adds practical upgrades:

- **Simplified stand**: Tool-free assembly with a lighter, prong-based design .

- **New colors**:

 Racing Green

Ceramic White

 Ocean Blue

with color-matched remotes and speaker grilles .

- **Wall-mount compatibility**: Fits existing Gen 1 mounts and universal brackets .

**4. Sky OS: Smarter Software**

The rebranded **Sky OS** (formerly Entertainment OS) integrates live TV, on-demand content, and streaming apps like Netflix. Features include voice control (“Hello Sky…”), personalized playlists, and over 500 updates since 2021 . However, some users worry Gen 1 owners might miss future hardware-dependent upgrades .

**5. Pricing and Availability**

Sky Glass Gen 2 starts at **£14/month** (43-inch) on a 48-month plan, matching Gen 1 pricing. Outright costs range from £699 (43-inch) to £1,199 (65-inch). Subscriptions begin at £15/month for Sky Essential TV, which includes Netflix and Discovery+ . Orders opened on 12 February via Sky and Currys .

### **The Bigger Picture: Sky Glass Air and Market Strategy**

Alongside Gen 2, Sky teased the **Sky Glass Air**, a budget-friendly model launching later in 2025. The Air strips out the Dolby Atmos soundbar for a stereo setup but retains the 4K Quantum Dot screen and Sky OS. Available in Carbon Grey, Cotton White, and Sea Green, it targets cost-conscious buyers who may pair it with third-party audio .

This two-pronged approach—premium Gen 2 and affordable Air—reflects Sky’s push to dominate internet-delivered TV. As analyst Paolo Pescatore notes, bundling these TVs with Sky’s broadband could boost customer retention in a competitive streaming market .

### **What About Existing Sky Glass Owners?**

Sky assures Gen 1 users their TVs will **continue receiving software updates**, though hardware limitations may prevent some future features. Upgrading mid-contract isn’t possible, but many customers repurpose older models for secondary rooms .

---

### **The Verdict: Who Should Buy It?**

Sky Glass Gen 2 isn’t for OLED enthusiasts or gamers craving 4K/120Hz (it’s limited to 60Hz). However, its **simplicity and value** shine for casual viewers seeking an all-in-one solution. The integrated Sky TV experience, combined with Dolby Atmos and improved brightness, makes it a compelling upgrade for Gen 1 owners and newcomers alike .

As Fraser Stirling, Sky’s Global Chief Product Officer, puts it: “Our job is to give customers the best experience.” With Gen 2 and Air, Sky is doubling down on accessibility—proving you don’t need cutting-edge specs to deliver crowd-pleasing TV .
